- An electronic patient record implementation in a Norwegian hospital that eliminated its paper-based medical records entirely by scanning. The study concludes that this benefited medical secretaries the most and to a lesser extent clinicians. The study measures user perception with a questionnaire. It would have been interesting to compare the findings with a benefits study carried out before and after electronic patient record implementation using a more objective method. Might this study indicate user perceptions post-NPfIT? Download a study of an electronic patient record implementation: PDF (481K).
- With the implementation of the NHS National Programme for IT (NPfIT) primary care nurses will have to work with computers. Information about patients will be almost exclusively held in electronic patient records; and much of the information about best practice is most readily accessible via computer terminals. Nurses in Sussex Primary Care Trust were surveyed using a questionnaire to examine the influence of age and nursing profession on the level of computer use. The study concludes that using computers in the surgery has become the norm for primary care nurses. However, community nurses over 50 lack the confidence and skill of their younger, practice-based colleagues. Download a study of computer skills in a PCT: PDF (265K).
